AI Research, Cybersecurity, and Software Engineering Innovations

The University of Waikato is one of the world’s leading institutions for AI and machine learning research. Put that to work — Hiko Hub connects software and technology businesses directly to researchers, capability, and partnerships.

Tools That Changed How the World Builds Software

The University of Waikato didn’t just study machine learning — it built the tools the world uses to practise it. WEKA, MOA, and ADAMS are open source machine learning platforms developed at Waikato and downloaded over 12 million times. They’re taught and used at universities and research institutions worldwide.

That depth of expertise is available to NZ businesses through Hiko Hub. The Artificial Intelligence Institute — Te Ipu o te Mahara — is a dedicated research institute focused on translating world-leading machine learning, data science, and real-time analytics into commercial applications for New Zealand industry. It was established specifically to bridge the gap between university research and industry application.

The University of Waikato is consistently ranked among New Zealand’s top universities for research impact — a reflection of the quality and reach of its computing and AI research programmes. Computing degrees are accredited under the Seoul Accord, and the School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences is the first New Zealand member of the international iSchools network.

The Opportunity in AI and Software Right Now

AI is moving faster than most businesses can keep pace with internally. The organisations that will compete are those that connect to world-class research capability now — not when the market has already moved.

The TAIAO programme — a $13M, seven-year MBIE-funded initiative — is applying AI to environmental data science. The Cybersecurity Researchers of Waikato (CROW) group has been tackling cyber-physical systems, IIoT, and industrial security challenges since 2014. Waikato was the first in New Zealand to achieve Seoul Accord accreditation for its computing programmes.

TE IPU O TE MAHARA

AI for industry

The Artificial Intelligence Institute partners directly with industry to apply machine learning and data science to commercial problems. Recent collaborations include a partnership with Waikato Management School and Company-X — a NZ software firm — on AI-driven decision-making tools. Industry partnerships are a core part of the Institute’s mission.

CROW

Cybersecurity research

The Cybersecurity Researchers of Waikato (CROW) group tackles pressing security challenges across cyber-physical systems, IIoT, cloud security, and industrial control systems. CROW has run the NZ Cybersecurity Challenge since 2014 — building a pipeline of security talent for the industry.
