Marine Science Research and Industry Partnerships

The University of Waikato’s marine science programme is based in Tauranga — right where it should be. Hiko Hub gives marine science businesses direct access to researchers, specialist facilities, and commercialisation pathways on the doorstep of the ocean.

Research That Connects to the Ocean

Tauranga is the right place for marine science research. The University of Waikato’s Tauranga campus sits close to the Bay of Plenty’s coastline and marine ecosystems, and the marine science programme reflects that — with active research in marine ecology, coastal science, aquaculture, and marine biotechnology.

The University is ranked 93rd globally for SDG14: Life Below Water. That’s not a credential for its own sake — it reflects genuine research depth in the field.

The Hiko difference

Solve Marine Science Challenges

Whether you’re developing new marine products, validating aquaculture processes, or looking for research partners to tackle environmental or commercial challenges, the University of Waikato has the expertise to help.

A current example: the University’s MacroAlgal Biotechnologies Group is developing a seaweed platform for methane mitigation and high-value agri-bioproducts — backed by $13M+ in funding, with a 1,000m² cultivation facility in Tauranga. Businesses working in adjacent areas have a ready research partner.

What Hiko Hub Makes Possible in Marine Science

Premium Seas

Mozuku fucoidan had never been produced at commercial scale outside Japan. Premium Seas worked with University of Waikato marine scientists to develop the extraction process — and took the product to market in New Zealand and the US.

The Opportunity in Marine Science Right Now

Marine conservation in New Zealand is a growing priority — regulatory pressure, aquaculture growth, and the global push toward sustainable ocean industries are all accelerating demand for science-backed solutions.

Businesses that engage university research now are better positioned to develop, validate, and commercialise products ahead of that curve. The University of Waikato is already working on the problems this industry needs to solve.
