Sustainable Construction Research and Engineering backed by University Research

Access dedicated construction research capability at the University of Waikato — and put it to work on the challenges your business is facing right now. Hiko Hub is here to facilitate your route in.

Research Built for the Industry

The Cold-formed Steel Structures Group is the University of Waikato’s leading construction research team. Led by Professor James Lim, Dr Krishanu Roy, and Dr Arthur Zhiyuan Fang — alongside 30 postgraduate researchers — the group works across sustainable construction materials, modern methods of construction, and digital building technologies.

Their research covers cold-formed steel, fibre-reinforced polymers, 3D printed concrete, machine learning for structural analysis, and Construction 4.0 applications including BIM, VR, and AR. The group has attracted more than $3 million in NZ industry funding and collaborates with construction businesses directly.

Engineering programmes are recognised internationally under the Washington Accord.

The Opportunity in Construction Right Now

New Zealand’s construction industry faces rising costs, skills shortages, and growing sustainability pressure. Businesses that invest in research partnerships now will be better placed to develop and commercialise the solutions the industry needs.

The University of Waikato’s Cold-formed Steel Structures Group is researching materials and methods that reduce cost and environmental impact — including cold-formed steel, fibre-reinforced polymers, and 3D printed concrete. If you’re working in these areas, you have a ready research partner.

Common Questions About Working With Us

The Cold-formed Steel Structures Group researches sustainable and cost-effective construction — including cold-formed steel, fibre-reinforced polymers, 3D printed concrete, machine learning for structural analysis, and Construction 4.0 technologies like BIM and VR/AR.

Yes. The Large Scale Lab complex includes structural testing, 3D printing, a mechanical workshop, and engineering design software. Businesses can access these through a research partnership or facility agreement.

The easiest starting point is a conversation with Hiko Hub. We’ll identify the right researchers and pathways — whether that’s contract research, expert consulting, or a longer-term R&D partnership.

Research partnerships are available to businesses of any size. The right pathway depends on what you’re trying to solve, not how big you are.
